Micro to Massive: The not so Little Piggy

By Laura Gooderham

The world recently went crazy over their love for teeny tiny micro-pigs. Micro-pigs are a miniature type of pig who are used for scientific research or as pets.

These little pigs have been sold from companies and breeders far and wide, however not all have turned out to be as described on their label. Some micro-pigs have grown into mammoth sized pigs and owners have been at a loss as to what to do.

Beth Dickinson, 30, who lives in Cleethorpes, bought her two young children a micro-pig as a Christmas present. “The kids are great with animals and I thought it was a lovely present. We have enough space in the house and in the garden and a pig was something a little different to a pet dog. However it turned out to be extremely different from having a dog,” she told Paws and Claws.

Her pig, Quinn, grew very quickly to the size of a normal pig. She said: “We were told she would hardly grow. I noticed a sudden difference in her size and thought my daughter had been feeding her extra treats in secret. Quinn became too big for her bed, she was struggling to get through the doors but I just did not have the heart to sell her.”

After complaining to the breeder, Beth decided to make the best of the situation and moved Quinn to her parent’s house in the next street where they had a bigger garden and more room in the house. “It’s best for everybody because Quinn has more room, my children can still see her and my parents are retired so she’ll always have company,” she said.

Beth has urged those who are thinking of buying a micro-pig to ensure they’re buying from a certified breeder or company or to contact the RSPCA on 0300 123 4999 if the same thing has happened to you or someone you know.
