I am a Quokka. I am a distant cousin to Kangaroos. I carry my babies, which are called Joeys, in a pouch in my stomach. I have strong back legs so I can hop around vegetation and thick grass. I live in Southwestern Australia and I am now mostly found on just two islands off the Australian coast: Rottnest Island and Bald Island. We do not have to worry about predators there. We are very sociable and love humans. It may look as though I am smiling at you sometimes, but I pant just like a dog to cool myself down when it is hot.  We often visit cafés and campsites however human food doesn’t agree with us so there are strict rules not to feed us. I like to eat plants, grass and leaves. In Australia’s dry weather, we can go for months without drinking water. I am nocturnal which means I sleep during the day and wake up at night when the temperature is cooler.
