Elephant
We are the largest land animal on earth with the largest African Elephant ever spotted being 13 feet tall. Sadly, there are only three types of elephant left in the wild today: The Aisian Elephant, The African Elephant and the African forest Elephant. On average, African elephants grow to be around 3.3 metres tall and can weigh up to 5,500 kg. We form very deep family bonds with each other and live in tight matriarchal groups of females called a herd. The oldest and largest female in the herd is known as the matriarch and she is the elephant which leads the herd. When a new calf is born, it is raised and protected by all of us. Male elephants will leave a herd at around 12-15 and lead solitary lives or live temporarily with other males. We are extremely intelligent and have a memory span that can last for many years. Unfortunately, one of the key threats that we face is loss of habitat. Due to climate change, our habitats are getting hotter meaning its more difficult for us to forage for food. In addition to this, poachers who try and hunt us for our ivory is another threat that places our futures at risk.
