Badger
My name is said to come from the French word ‘becheur’ which means ‘digger’. We live underground in complex setts that we dig ourselves, usually there will be about six of us living in each sett. We’re commonly found in the open countryside however we’re very adaptable and can actually survive in other habitats such as woods, sea cliffs and even quarries. On average we grow to become about 71cm long and can weigh up to 18kg making us one of the larger wild animals living in Britain today. I’m very easy to identify due to my distinctive dark grey and white body, with dark stripes over my eyes but we’re very shy creatures and being nocturnal means we’re not spotted often. Unfortunately, in recent years there has been some debate over whether we increase the likelihood of cattle contracting TB but there is no clear scientific evidence to prove this.
